Designing Digital Communities: The Questions Behind Warka

Why belonging needs more than a feed, and what that means for a community product.

Begin with a reason to return

A community product needs a purpose beyond keeping people scrolling. For Warka, the opportunity is to bring Ethiopian conversations, events, groups, and local discovery into a shared space. A useful question is not just “what can someone post?” but “what can someone find here that makes their day better?”

Give different needs their own space

A conversation, an event, and a business listing ask different things of an interface. A conversation needs context. An event needs practical details. A business needs a clear identity and a way to learn more. The Warka concepts give these experiences distinct spaces while keeping a familiar visual language across them.

Treat trust as a design question

Before a community platform grows, its team should think through how people find help, understand participation rules, and control what they share. These decisions belong alongside the visual design. Warka’s current previews illustrate a direction; they do not represent live member activity or established community outcomes.
